VISIT OF JAPANESE PRIME MINISTER: CALL FOR BRIEFS

The Japanese Prime Minister, Mr Toshiki Kaifu, will pay a short working visit to the UK on 11-12 January as part of his European tour to Bonn, Berlin, Brussels, Paris, London, Rome, Warsaw and Budapest (in that order).

Mr Kaifu will be accompanied by the Japanese Foreign Minister, Mr Nakayama.

2. On 12 January Kaifu will have one hour of talks with the Prime Minister, from 11.00-12.00 am, followed by a short working lunch from 12.15-1.15 pm. Given the need for interpretation, time for the talks is limited. FCO telno 996 and Tokyo telno 1172, attached, set out the agenda and how the range of topics might be handled. main subject of the talks is likely to be East/West relations, but China/Hong Kong/Boat People will also be on the agenda. The talks should also cover international economic issues and bilateral matters, to follow on from the Prime Minister's discussion of these subjects with Mr Kaifu in Tokyo in September.
