Dear Ms. Oldfield

Thank you for your letter of 11 Jan 1986 to Mr Brooks. This was passed to me

for attention,

All nature conservation activities on St. Helena, with the exception of the

protection of fish stocks, fall under the management of the Agriculture and Forestry Department. The fisheries protection regulations are managed by the St. Helena Fisheries Corporation, Both these bodies come under the political wing of the Agricultural & Natural Resources Committee of Legislative Council,

As you are obviously aware the most significant nature conservation activities on the Island are those connected with the conservation of the endemic flora,

the maintenance of forest cover and attempts to prevent any further

degradation of the semi- barren Crown Waste lands that make up about one

third of the land area, Clearly you are already well informed on this work.

Official support and enthusiasm for conservation activities has a good record

over the last few years as demonstrated by:

Allocation of scarce Dev/Aid funds to finance the labour component of

the endemic flora conservation project,

Allocation of scarce training resources to send a forestry employee to

the RBG Kew,

Recent new legislation, that allows regulations to be made to protect +$1

species of, wild life or fish.
