RESTRICTED AND MANAGEMENT IN CONFIDENCE

is wrong, and to ensure that he kept others in touch (lessons here for Mr Stimson?). Adaptability is essential. It is not necessary to be very clever but lots of common sense is required, and one has to like other people. Small island experience is a great advantage.

5. Mr Bradley was doubtful about the wisdom of appointing Governors in their early 40s. He thought that local people might interpret this as down-grading of the post and that they would try to take advantage of somebody they considered to be of less experience, although at the end of the day they would accept a younger man. A Governor needed patience and good political attenae. It helped to have younger children off one's hands, not least because one's wife needed to give a great deal of support. She tended to be looked to by the community for all sorts of welfare and related work. It was important to have a professional "soul-mate" the job could be a lonely one and it helped to keep things in perspective, if one had somebody in whom one could confide. Mr Herdman also made much of this point.//.I do not suggest that all this should be incorporated in Mr Fearn's reply to Mr Scott, but I hope that it is of some help and of a wider interest.
