EXTENSION OF INTERNATIONAL AGREEMENTS TO DEPENDENT TERRITORIES

Introduction

1.

A significant number of international agreements to which

the UK is a party extend to some or all of the Dependent

Territories.

Such extension may be effected at the time the UK

becomes a party or, where possible and appropriate, subsequently.

2. Before arranging to extend an international agreement to a

Dependent Territory, the FCO consults the authorities in the Territory. If the Territory wishes the agreement to be extended

to it, we must be satisfied that the Territory has the capacity

to comply with the agreement and, in particular, that the necessary legislation is in place to enable the obligations

Each Dependent imposed by the agreement to be fulfilled.

Territory is therefore asked to ensure that appropriate local

legislation is in place (or, where possible, we can suggest the extension of Westminster legislation) and that sufficient local resources are available to meet any obligations imposed by the

agreement. However, it is not always possible to identify the precise resource implications until the agreement has been in force for some time. [On certain matters (eg maritime treaties) a
