Hong Kong is likely to continue to benefit from the rapid economic growth in China generally and in Guangdong in particular. Any relaxation in China's import control measures so as to relieve some of the pressures arising from the strong domestic demand is likely to benefit Hong Kong's exports to China. 1988 as a whole, those of Hong Kong's domestic exports and re-exports to China which are to meet China's domestic demand, rather than for outward processing, can be expected to show substantial growth over 1987 (paragraph 39).

(13) In the first half of 1988, there were signs of some

slowdown in the growth of outward processing activities, reflecting Hong Kong's less buoyant domestic export performance in its overseas markets. But in the long term, Hong Kong businessmen are expected to continue to take advantage of the lower labour and land costs in China so as to maintain their price competitiveness in the world market. seems that most manufacturers in Hong Kong consider the Pearl River Delta region as more attractive than Thailand as a place for their outward processing activity, mainly on account of geographical proximity.
