Report on visit to the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (10 November 1988)
Background to the visit
A team comprising officials from Economic
Analysis Division (EAD) of Economic Services Branch (ESB) and Industry Department visited the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone (SSEZ) on 10 November 1988. The major objectives of the visit were to observe the economic and industrial developments in the SSEZ and to assess their possible implications for Hong Kong. The composition of the team is shown at Annex I, the visit programme at Annex II and a list of the Chinese officials and businessmen met during the visit at Annex III.

Since its establishment in 1980, the SSEZ has grown very rapidly, from a small village into a substantial "new town". Covering an area of 327.5 km2, the SSEZ is the largest of China's four special economic zones and is part of Shenzhen City

Shenzhen is reported to have a population of 800,000 currently (including those in the counties under Shenzhen Municipal Government's administration), of which half are temporary

All the socio-economic statistics of Shenzhen refer to the City a whole. But the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone is believed to dominate these totals. In this report Shenzhen City is referred to as Shenzhen or the City and the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone as the SSEZ or SEZ.
