Hong Kong's re-exports of China origin is related to China's efforts in promoting its exports and the generally

stable export prices of Chinese products. After allowing

for a re-export margin of 15%, about 76% of the imports of China origin in 1988 were subsequently re-exported, with re-exports of China origin accounting for 48% of Hong Kong's total re-exports. The corresponding share in 1987

was 46%.

This is slightly smaller than imports from China as some imports from China are not of China origin.

For analytical purposes, a re-export margin of 15% has been assumed in deriving the estimates and growth rates of retained imports (footnote (23)).
