UK VISAS FOR CHINESE

We continue to receive complaints about slowness in processing visas. The Head of Migration and Visa Department was recently in Peking reviewing the visa operation. We await his report.

STATE VISIT BY PRESIDENT YANG

8. The Chinese MFA have proposed that President Yang should make a State Visit to the UK in 1990. The Department will shortly be recommending that this proposal should be accepted. But it would be premature to mention this to the Chinese Ambassador. If asked, Lord Glenarthur might say that the proposal is still under consideration. The Chinese Ambassador earlier sounded out

Lord Glenarthur about the possibility that Prime Minister Li Peng might visit Britain this autumn. Apparently Li no longer intends to include the UK in his itinerary. If this subject is raised, Lord Glenarthur might explain that it would have been difficult to accommodate Li in an already crowded programme of inward visits by Guests of Government in the autumn.
