42. A second meeting will take place in October 1989, on "Increasing the Flow of Foreign Investment into China." The purpose is to make specific proposals to the Chinese leadership at the highest level for improvements which could reduce the complications and frustrations of the present process, leading to increased and more successful foreign investment in China.
43. The meeting will provide an opportunity after careful preparation - to identify systematically the obstacles which inhibit investment, as seen by a group of (12) top international business and banking leaders with practical experience of investment in China. It will also help to improve understanding in the international business community of Chinese concerns, priorities and potential.

It is also agreed that a second high-level meeting, similar to the meeting on China and the World in the Nineties but more narrowly focussed, will take place in Spring 1990. This meeting will of course build on the specific results of the two smaller meetings in 1989, but it will take a broader, strategic view of emerging issues for China in the nineties.

In conclusion, the meeting on China and the World in the Nineties was considered useful and successful by the Chinese government, and by the international participants who devoted their time to it. Besides its more immediate results, it has opened up a channel for informal but systematic contacts between influential Chinese and foreign personalities, based on sound substantive preparation.

This approach appears to be valued by the Chinese leadership. It has focussed attention and provided insights into important international trends and relationships. But it has done this in a way which is immediately relevant to the future of China and to the concerns of its leaders. It offers the promise of interesting and useful results in the future.
