MR MARTIN LEES
China
Mr Lees called on me on 10 January to pass on copies of his latest ideas, attached, for his series of meetings on China (my letter 021/1 of 17 November to Sir Alan Donald in Peking).

2. He said that he had recently seen Lord Barber to discuss these. Barber had suggested that Mr Kit McMahon (Midland Bank) might be approached to participate. Barber was slightly worried that the first of the two meetings on banking likely to be too "technical" for himself to make a useful contribution.

3. Lees sought my ideas on participation from Hong Kong, particularly for the second meeting, but possibly also for the first. I suggested Gordon Wu (Hopewell Holdings) and/or David Li (Bank of East Asia). Lees had already thought of Wu, and suggested him to the Chinese. I also suggested him to the Chinese. I also suggested that Lees might call on Reg Holloway at the British Trade Commission in Hong Kong to get other ideas.
4. In answer to his request for names of UK businessmen with experience of investing in China I offered Sir Eric Sharp (Cable & Wireless). Even if unable to participate himself, Sharp as President of the Sino-British Trade Council might have other names to propose.
5. Lees is off to China in mid/late February. He is likely to call on Sir Alan Donald.
