The handing over of Hong Kong in 1997, Bernard Levin's article, and the reply of Sir Geoffrey lowe.
Thank you for your Letter of the 3rd instant and am grateful for the newspapaper reply by Sir Geoffrey Howe and the conference speech of Lord Glenarthur on the 21st September.
In spite of these distinguished opinions close to the seat of Government, I cannot alter my views as previously expressed on the future of Hongkong.
The articles you have supplied remind me of the chapter in Anthony Eden's book Full Circle' dealing with Britain's attempt to deal with the threat of nationalisation of the Canal Company by Col. Nasser. It was so right and so just to organise an International Police Force headed by Britain, France and Israel to re-take the zone from the Egyptians, but he overlooked the American financial involvement in that region after finding the money for the Aswan Dam from the World Bank. Too late to change his mind after the invasion during the American Presidential Election, Edon was told to get out of there by Eisenhower's watchdog J.F. Dalles. Ignored at first. Eden had to comply after economic sanctions forced this decision.
Likewise in HongKong the Americans have probably made up their minds to take over the colony as soon as the Brits have departed if not before. Prince Charles can still turn up with his Governor General's cocked hat to give the colony to the injuns (sorry Chinese) and convince world opinion that Britain has ceased to have an Empire.
I wonder what Sir Winston Churchill would have said to these goings on. After reading his 6 volumes on the Second World War which never stated the precise reason for the War by Britain, he would probably say 'keep up the good work of not explaining to world opinion what has already been agreed behind closed doors for Hongkong's future'.
As I said before, the intelligent Chinese in longKong will go to the States leaving the boatpeople lo return to the homeland, Britain. We might also be honoured with drug traffickers, the Triads and all the criminals to be released from Changy Gaol, Lo receive sympathy and understanding from our Home Secretary, Douglas Hurd. Listen to his speech on Law and Order on Thursday it might give a clue to the influx of criminals from longkong.
I think the Americans had this problem in 1962 after Russia took over Cuba and kicked out the Yankie Imperialist criminal lackeys who swam from the Bay of Pigs.
for it
