I believe that you were informed by Lord Barber about the meeting on China and the World in the Nineties which took place in June of last year.
Also, I understand from Hugh Davies of the United Kingdom Mission to OECD, that he has informed you about the activities which are planned for this year as a follow up to the meeting.
I enclose a programme for 1989 and you will see that there will be two meetings on important issues, again at the highest level. Once again, I am putting together an international group for each meeting on behalf of the Chinese authorities. The response has been very positive.
You will see that the meetings address two issues of vital importance to the process of modernisation in China: first, in June, The Reform of the Financial and Banking Systems in China, and then in October, Increasing the Flow of Foreign Investment into China.
I would greatly value your advice on the nature of the problems which face China in these two fields, and on the most appropriate participants from the United Kingdom.
H.E. Ambassador Alan Ewen Donald,
Embassy of the United Kingdom,
No. 11, Guang Hua Lu,
Beijing.
