CHINA'S FOREIGN POLICY: HONG KONG AND "MACAO
1.
The latest edition of "Beijing Review" carries a lengthy article by Qian Qichen entitled "New China's Diplomacy: 40 Years On". This is yet another review of 40 years of China's foreign policy (Shaun Riordan is preparing a report on items which appeared in the People's Daily last week) and I thought you might be interested in seeing the section dealing with Hong Kong and Macao. It is couched in pretty standard terms though I was struck by the reference to due regard being given to the economic interests of Britain, Portugal and some other countries in Hong Kong and Macao after 1997 and 1999 and by the reference to the signing of the Joint Declarations as having opened up broad prospects for closer cooperation between China and Britain and China and Portugal.
