Attitudes towards the political future of Macau mark an fairly even split with around half of the respondents being confident and half not confident.

The crackdown of the Beijing Student Movement on June 4 doubled up the emigration intention among Chinese in Macau (16%

Portuguese will mostly return to Portugal (82%); Chinese prefer North America (51%) and Australia (14%); the top preference of Macanese is Portugal (54%), followed by Australia (13%), the U.S.A. Perceived credibility of the Sino-Portugnese Joint Declaration is below average and the source of doubt mainly lies with the Chinese Government. Nevertheless, Macau residents are still satisfied about the Declaration, particularly when compared with the Sino-British Joint Declaration for Hong Kong.

What do people think the Macau Government should do?

Education and social welfare projects should be given top priority. Having her own Airport is likely to increase economic autonomy. Localization of Government will help increasing political confidence.
