Taiwan delegation leaves Peking after ADB meeting (FE/0453 A3/6 Excerpts) ROC Finance Minister Shirley Kuo, while demonstrating the ROC's impressive economic strength in the 22nd annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank [ADB] in Peiping [Peking], pledged Friday [5th May] that the ROC will work more closely with the ADB in years ahead. In her speech_to_the_ADB meeting, Minister Kuo reminded the participants that the Pacific area has become the world's fastest-growing and most dynamic economy as a whole...

As to the ADB's operational activities, the ROC has committed 5m US dollars out of its international economic co- operation development fund for participation in the second fund mobilisation of the Asian development equity fund. (CNA in English 1604 gmt 5 May 89)

[Note: CNA (in English 1425 gmt 7 May 89) quoted Shirley Kuo as saying at a press conference before leaving Peking that the Taiwan delegation's “sole mission” in Peking had been to “attend the ADB meeting, carrying no political significance at all”.

Macao Basic Law Advisory Committee's Standing Committee elected (Excerpt) According to a Xinhua News Agency report from Macao, at the preparatory meeting of the standing committee of Macao Basic Law Advisory Committee held on the afternoon of 26th April, the chairman, vice-chairmen and secretary-general of the standing committee were elected by secret ballot after careful discussions and consultations. Cui Deqi was elected chairman; He Houhua, Tang Xingqiao and (?Ou Anli) vice-chairmen; and Liao Zeyun secretary-general. Ma Man Kei, member of the provisional covenors group, presided over the meeting. Other members of the group and 15 members of the standing committee attended the meeting. According to the namclist of the advisory committee members approved on 7th April, the advisory committee is composed of 90 people...

and India agree on need to increase India and China have agreed on the urgent need to raise bilateral trade from the current level of about 200m dollars; this emerged at a meeting between the Indian Finance Minister, S.B. Chavan, and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Bingqian, in Peking on 7th May (New Delhi home service in English 1530 gmt 7 May 89). The talks were held in a “friendly and warm atmosphere" (PTI in English 0954 gmt 7 May 89).

China and Indian co-operate on geological exploration India and China are to co-operate in geology and mineral exploration and will also exchange scientific and technical information in these fields. A memorandum was signed to this effect in Peking at the end of the Indian Steel and Mines Minister, Mr Fotedar's, visit to China. Fiji's Finance Minister visits China Chinese State Councillor and Minister of Finance Wang Bingqian met J.N. Kamikamica, Minister of Finance of Fiji, in Peking on 7th May. Kamikamica started his official goodwill visit to China after attending the annual meeting of the Asian Development Bank. The minister is due to visit Hangzhou, Shanghai, Canton and Shenzhen. government delegation tours South Pacific A Chinese delegation led by Li Xuejian, Vice Minister for Foreign Economic Relations and Trade, is touring the South Pacific. Li said in Suva that trade between China and Fiji was worth more than 25m US dollars last year, up 92% on the previous year. Economic co-operation between the two countries had expanded with some joint venture projects now finalised and others under discussion. The delegation has gone on to Papua New Guinea.
