Last

October,

I said that a range of studies was

being carried out

to

devise a strategy for the long term

development of our port and airport. These have now been

completed. They show that there is a clear case on economic

grounds for building a new airport as soon as possible.

After an exhaustive study of the various options,

Government has decided to build a new Hong Kong

Airport at Chek Lap Kok.

It will be a

International

modern

two-runway airport built to the most exacting

standards and able to operate 24 hours a day. When

completed, it will be able to handle 80 million passengers

a year over three timco the maximum capacity of Kai Tak.

Our aim will be to open the first of the two runways by the

early part of 1997.
