Having just concluded a short two-week recess, our Legislative Council this afternoon had its first meeting following the dreadful events in Peking on 4 June. Because of the very strong impact events in China have had in Hong Kong, I decided, unusually, to make a statement from the Chair. Since it touches on a number of points which came up during my appearance before the Foreign Affairs Committee, I thought you might like to see a copy and am sending one with this letter.
I am most grateful to you and members of the Committee for being so understanding about changing the time of my evidence. I hope it did not inconvenience you too much. As you can imagine, sticking to my original plan of leaving Hong Kong on 5 June seemed untenable after the events of the previous day. thought it important to stay in Hong Kong until the evening of Wednesday 7 June since a general strike had originally been called for that day and I wished to be here to deal with anything that might occur.
