1.
There have been a number of calls in Parliament for immediate
action to be taken with the international community to seek guarantees for the resettlement of Hong Kong people if things were to go disastrously wrong in Hong Kong. The FAC report on Hong Kong
also features this idea.
2. The Prime Minister and the Secretary of State raised the future
of Hong Kong with Mr Hawke and Senator Evans during the Australian
Prime Minister's recent visit. The Australians said that their
record spoke for itself and implied willingness to help if the need
arose. But they were not more specific than that. The Prime Minister has already told the House that Hong Kong will be raised at
CHOGM in October.
3. In his statement on 5 July, the Secretary of State announced
that he had sent a message about Hong Kong's problems to his
Economic Summit counterparts and that he intended to raise the
matter at the Paris Summit.
