WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR PARTICULAR GROUPS OF PEOPLE?

(a) War Widows?

Such people do not automatically qualify under present Immigration Rules.

Would welcome Committee's views and will give careful thought to any recommendations.

Home Secretary does not rule out some flexibilitty in

this area.

(b) Spouses of British citizens?

Citizenship cannot be granted without some period of

residence in this country.

But there is no problem for spouses of British citizens to enter this country with their partners.

(c) Students?

(a)

To make special changes for Hong Kong students only would be unfair to other students, including other British nationals studying here (ie BOCs of Malaysian

origin).

But applications for citizenship from those who have been here for long period (over 10 years) are considered

sympathetically.

Young professionals/entrepreneurs?

Very difficult to define and ring fence this group.

Should any change apply only to Hong Kong people or

worldwide?
