FOREIGN AFFAIRS COMMITTEE ENQUIRY INTO HONG KONG: SECRETARY OF
STATE'S FORMAL EVIDENCE, 14 JUNE
1. The Secretary of State is holding an Office meeting on Monday
5 June at 8.30am to discuss preparations for his formal evidence to
the Foreign Affairs Committee on 14 June. I submit a draft brief
for consideration at this meeting.
2. The Clerk to the Committee has so far given us no specific
indication of the areas they will wish to cover, or particular questions they will wish to put to the Secretary of State on
14 June. We are unlikely to know this until much nearer the date. The briefs therefore represent our best guess at this stage of what is likely to arise. In some cases (eg Vietnamese Boat People, the
effect of developments in China on Hong Kong) further updating will certainly be required.
3.
It would be particularly helpful to have guidance at Monday's
meeting on the form and length of the briefing, as well as content.
