The United States has an annual ceiling of 270,000 for the admission of immigrants falling within certain preference/non preference categories with a ceiling of 20,000 admissions for natives of any one foreign state.
9. The preference categories include:
(a) unmarried sons or daughters of United States citizens or
permanent resident aliens
(b)
qualified professional people or people with exceptional ability in the science and arts whose entry will benefit
the economy, culture or welfare of the United States and
whose services are sought by employers in the United States (equivalent to the UK work permit system).
(c) Various family relatives of a United States citizen, eg
married children, brothers, sisters etc.
(a) Persons capable of performing specified skilled or
unskilled labour for which a shortage of employable and willing persons exists in the United States (again equivalent to the UK work permit category). However this
category has not been available since 1978.
