TRANSCRIPT B; SELECT COMMITTEE ON HONG KONG 12 JUNE 1989

SIR DAVID VILSON;

I think the events in Tibet pale into insignificance

almost in comparison with what has been happening recently

Certainly, just looked at from my vantage

in Peking.

can reasonably point, which is the only vantage point I

speak from, the effect of them pales into insignificance.

Certainly, the Chinese Government is very touchy

about what is said on what goes on in China and we are already seeing sigus of that touchiness about what has been said internationally about recent events in Peking.

It would surprise me if we do not see more signs of that

touchiness.

At the same time

Mr. Lawrence was making

and it goes back to a point that

I do hope that the Chinese

Authorities see the effect of what has happened on Hong

Kong and what is I am sure will continue to be their hope, that the arrangements for the future should really work. They still have an immensa vested interest in making sure that those arrangements work. There is a huge amount of remedial work that now needs to be done to make sure that

happens and I hope that they will see it.

MR. MICHAEL JOPLING:

Sir David, is it your view that part of that remedial work would be an improvement to the Joint

Declaration of 19847
