TRANSCRIPT A SELECT COMMITTEE ON HONG KONG 12 JUTE 1989

SIR DAVID WILSON (COFT):

Ve did later, and this followed the events of 4

June, bave one incident in which a certain hooligan

alement got involved and that was dealt with very quickly

and very effectively by the police.

And the other point I would like to make is that

throughout this the Royal Hong Kong Palice Force have

behaved with remarkable skill and won themselves great

credit in Hong, well deserved credit both in handling

peaceful demonstrations and in handling one incident that

got out of control for a short time.

what happened in Peking on 4 June was watched in Hong Kong

with what one can only describe as total horror. Here

people have seen what happened on their television

screena, it was the same for us in Hong Kong. Ve saw

those events every day, every hour, reported with great

accuracy and faithfulness from Peking, and all of us

Hong Kong were horrified by what we saw.

ia

are still living in the aftermath of those

appalling events and the exitional effect it has had on

Hong Kong, There can be no doubt that it has shaken

confidence in Hong Kong, it could hardly do otherwise.

has made people question the arrangemente about the

future, it could hardly do otherwise.
