6. Entry to Australia under either the family or economic migration programmes (with the exception of the business migration programme) is determined by a points system. The highest scorers in each category are accepted. Under the Business Migration Programme, businessmen need an inital investment of half a million Australian dollars, a proven track record and sufficient funds to cover

settlement costs.

Citizenship

To apply for citizenship, an applicant must first have

permanent resident status in Australia. After permanent resident status has been granted, the applicant must either have been continuously resident in Australia for at least 2 years or have lived in Australia for 2 years out of the last 5, one year of which must have been in the last 2 years.

The United States has an annual ceiling of 270,000 for the admission of immigrants falling within certain preference/non preference categories with a ceiling of 20,000 admissions for natives of any one foreign state.
