TRANSCRIPT J: SELECT COMMITTEE RE HONG KONG - 24 MAY 1989
-19-
MR. IAN TAYLOR:
That is a general increase, then, in settlement?
KR. TIX RENTON;
Yes.
MR. IAN TAYLOR:
Do you expect this to continue and, indeed, would
you encourage Hong Kong people to try their hand?
PAGE. O247056
MR. TIM RENTON:
We would certainly encourage Kong Kong people to
come here, for example, as we would others, if they are,
for example, persons of independent means and they wish to
settle in this country, they have connections in this
country or if they are ready to come here as businessmen
to invest and build up a clearly British business.
The only thing I have to say is that in both those
categories, to mention just two, there is a degree of
clear residence in this country or putting their roots
down in this country that is needed.
XR.
IAN TAYLOR:
That differs slightly from perhaps the Canadian
situation which seems to be less demanding on the
residence factor.
