3 DTI Export Services
dti
the department for Enterprise
The full range of DTI export services is available to UK companies in respect of Hong Kong.
Hong Kong is usually, on an annual basis, one of the most visited markets under the Outward Mission Scheme: in 1989 19 missions are
due to visit with DTI financial support. In 1989 there should be groups of British exhibitors at at least 8 international exhibitions in Hong Kong under the DTI supported scheme, and two store promotions of British consumer goods are scheduled for the autumn.
Since early 1988 the DTI, with full support of the British Trade Commission and the Hong Kong Trade Advisory Group, has carried forward arrangements for an all-British exhibition, 'Britain in Hong Kong', which will take place between 9 and 12 November 1989 at HK's new Convention and Exhibition Centre. TRHS The Prince and Princess of Wales will visit the territory at this time and will officially open the Convention and Exhibition Centre and the three attendant exhibitions (of which this is one). The exhibition is perceived as a unique opportunity for UK firms to take maximum advantage of HK's role as a shop window for the Asia-Pacific region, with all the media attention and visitors which the Royal Visit will attract, and to underline the UK's confidence in- and commitment to- the future of HK.
4 Hong Kong Trade Advisory Grove (EKTAG)
-
HKTAG is one of 17 Area Advisory Groups of the British Overseas Trade Board. It has 15 members (including the Secretary from OT2) who are drawn from UK companies experienced in trading with Hong Kong, Government Departments (DTI and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office), Hong Kong representative bodies in London, a bank and the Confederation of British Industry. Main meetings are held quarterly at the DTI, with ad hoc meetings involving certain members - taking place as necessary. HKTAG holds regular seminars, mostly in regional centres, aimed at drawing the attention of UK business representatives to the attractions of the Hong Kong market, and develops other specific proposals to enhance the UK's performance there. HKTAG's Chairman is Mr Michael Rosenberg, Chairman of Umedco (Far East) Limited (who is also Chairman of the Association of British Health Care Industries).
5 DTI'S Commercial Strategy towards Hong Kong
a)
Objective
To secure an increase in the level of UK exports to Hong Kong and in the UK's share of the HK import market amongst our OECD competitors (all of whom have declining or static overall market shares in favour of China, as a result of its spectacular growth in cross-border trade with HK).
