Sir Y.K. Kan, the former senior member of EXCO, rang me up over the week-end to complain about
The same sort of immigration procedures in London. point was made to the Foreign Secretary in Hong Kong on 1st June, when he was asked why more than three hundred Hong Kong people were refused entry to Britain last year, and whether he knew that this was undermining confidence in Hong Kong.
His
Sir Y.K. said that recently a party of seventeen people from Hong Kong, travelling in a group, had seven of their number denied entry. He could not be specific about dates or place of entry, but I presume it was Gatwick. complaint was that when there was a rumpus about it in Hong Kong, there was no response from the Government to say that they were denied entry for good reason. Consequently, it had been claimed in Hong Kong that in some way Hong Kong people were being discriminated against, etc.
Please do not make special enquiries about this, but if you know the case and are satisfied there were good reasons for the seven being refused, I would be glad if you would let me know and I will deal with Sir Y.K.
If your Department has not heard of the case,
suggest you forget about it.
