Dear Groffrey,
Re: Dr. Stanley Ho, Hong Kong.
I should have replied sooner to your letter of 15th June about your Hong Kong trip.
I quite understand that it was impossible for you to talk to Dr. Ho or seek to arouse his enthusiasm for supporting the Oxford Hong Kong Archive project. It would certainly be a good idea if we could get him to fund this project, but I have to tell you that since I last wrote to you I have received a very discouraging letter from Dr. Ho. He says he will be channelling his funds into the Oriente Foundation, which limits its interests to Macau and Portugal. A Macau archive project is being considered which may also cover Hong Kong. He concludes his letter thus:
'Under the circumstances, I regret that the Hong Kong Archive in Oxford may become redundant, but in any case it does not fall into the scope of benefaction of the Foundation. '
It seems somewhat excessive for Dr. Ho to be telling us that our project is redundant, but for the time being the prospect of our receiving money from him appears to be about zero.
I thought you might like to be kept posted with regard to these matters.
you
