Dear Mr. McGlady,
I am writing in reply to your letter dated 21 June 1988 to Her Majesty the Queen which was referred to me by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
I wish to point out that some of the information quoted in the article published on "Variety" dated 6 January 1988 is incorrect. The survey referred to, in the article, the "Television and Sound Broadcasting Survey" was commissioned by the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority and carried out during February - March 1987 by an internationally-known research company, AGB McNair Hong Kong Ltd.. The survey covered a total sample of 2,597 individuals aged 15 to 69, rather than 800 respondents. As regards the sampling, the survey designed in close consultation with the Census and Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Government, and was based on representative sample of the population of Hong Kong prepared by probability sampling techniques.

The survey measured public opinion on a number of different aspects of television and sound broadcasting in Hong Kong, as well as monitoring trends and
and changes in public opinion since the last similar survey in 1985. the question of censorship, in general respondents considered that while the standards of censorship in Hong Kong were appropriate, the level of censorship in respect of programmes broadcast after 11.30 p.m. could be relaxed.
