50TH ANNIVERSARY OF SING TAO NEWSPAPERS IN HONG KONG AND 13TH
ANNIVERSARY OF ITS EUROPEAN EDITION
Problem
1. The editor of Sing Tao (UK) Ltd has written to the Secretary of
State, Mrs Chalker, Lord Glenarthur, Mr Eggar, Mr McLaren and
Mr Hum (HKD) in identical terms, inviting them to contribute a
message for worldwide publication to mark the anniversary of the newspapers in August. How should we respond?
Recommendation
2.
I recommend that separate messages should go from the Secretary of State and Mr McLaren as Senior Representative on the JLG.

Background
3.
Sing Tao is a prominent newspaper in Hong Kong and its European
edition is widely read amongst the Hong Kong Chinese community in
the UK and elsewhere. A contribution by the Secretary of State, and by Mr McLaren in his capacity as Senior UK Representative on the JLG, would be appropriate.
