to $HK111.06 million.
The Wing On (Holdings) Ltd has turned round a loss from its subsidiaries of $HK18.37 million in 1986 to a profit
of $HK3.26 million in 1987.
This is quite a turnabout and indicates that the Group is poised for bigger and better things.
And instead of rewarding themselves, the Directors of the Group have, in fact, taken a cut in Directors' Emolu- ments, from $HK6.72 million in 1986 to $HK6.61 million in
1987.
If it had not been for the crooked antics of the former Chief General Manager of The Wing On Bank Ltd, Mr Albert Kwok Chi Hong (now deceased), The Wing On Group would have been a hell of an investment.
Even so, thanks to the resignation of Dr Philip Kwok, who dropped out of the picture in 1986 at the July Annual General Meeting, the Group looks to be a winner at this juncture.
At the 1986 Annual General Meeting, Dr Philip Kwok resigned after making a speech in which he praised the loyalty of his deceased brother, Mr Albert Kwok Chi Hong, and then admitted that his brother was responsible for The Wing On Bank's massive debts and did, what Dr Philip Kwok termed, 'unfortunate things when he was sick'.
Dr Philip Kwok has since reduced his shareholding in The Wing On (Holdings) Ltd from 375,000 shares to 100,000
shares.
Dr Philip Kwok has also reduced his shareholding in a subsidiary, The Wing On Company Ltd, from 700,000 shares to 150,000 shares.
The funds raised by the disposals are in the vicinity of
$HK3 million.
The Wing On (Holdings) Ltd is a diversified Group with interests in department stores, property, insurance, banking, and broking of all sorts.
The largest contributor to the coffers is the juicy, recur- rent income from the rent derived from the Group's proper-
ties.
In the last Year, contributions from rentals alone amounted to about $HK71.83 million, or 45 percent of Operating Results.
Following rentals, the record Results in the Department Store Division, where the Net Profit went from the 1986 figure of $HK64.50 million to $HK90.96 million in 1987, was a fillip to the Group and contributed about $HK63 million to the $HK158-million Operating Results.
The 1987 Annual Report of The Wing On (Holdings) Ltd is relatively informative about the Group.
TARGET's economists have analysed the Group's ac- tivities presented in the Group's Annual Report. This analy- sis is summarised in the following tables:
