Patients and their families are required to be informed of the patient's rights under the Ordinance (section 27).

The maximum fine for the unlawful reception or detention of a mentally disordered person is increased (section 28).

Magistrates may grant search warrants to enable premises to be entered to retake escaped patients and to investigate the circumstances of persons suspected to be suffering from mental disorder, and police officers are given powers to take persons suffering from mental disorder and in immediate need of care and control to a place of safety for the purposes of medical examination and to enable arrangements to be made for their treatment and care (section 30).

Regulations may be made to supplement the new guardianship provisions (section 31).

Before the Governor assented to the Bill in the name and on behalf of Her Majesty, the Attorney General advised that he could properly do so.
