PROPOSED ADDITIONAL RESETTLEMENT COMMITMENT FOR VIETNAMESE BOAT
PEOPLE IN HONG KONG
1. An additional commitment of 1,000 is proposed, to run from now on the following basis:
(i)
(ii)
a) family groups rather
han
continuation of the present family reunion scheme on the existing basis once the present quota of 468 is exhausted
in May of June 1989. About another 200 meet the same
family reunion criteria: they would continue to be
resettled at a rate of 20 a month;
selected from those in Hong Kong who
an additional quota which might be drawn from the following categories: apply for settlement in the uk,
Ah, giving particular weight to:
unattached (2) Individuals;
in the wK
refugees selected on the basis of skills that could help them more quickly to become self-sufficient
bat skills refugees sponsored by organisations or individuals here
with other than family links with the UK
through contacts witt
those who have turned down earlier UK offers, thereby
making themselves ineligible for resettlement
elsewhere;
(a) long-stayers;
Resettlement under this heading would begin now and
run at an additional 20 a month until resettlement
under (i) is exhausted, and thereafter at 40 a
month.

Under this proposal resettlement would be at the rate of 40 a
month. It would stretch over about 2 years.
