IV. Reasons for departure
11. Unverified data collected in periodic surveys in Malaysia and Thailand have provided largely consistant, if sketchy, information on reasons for departures. Many invoke exclusion and marginalisation based on political, ethnic or religious grounds as the main reason for their departure. Exclusions are said to manifest themselves in terms of denial of employment, educational opportunities or civic rights. Some claim to have directly experienced persecution (reeducation, prison, new economic zones) for the same reasons. Many have a close member of their family in that situation. is also a considerable percentage who is driven by a desire to join relatives abroad. Finally, there are also those who invoke political dissent as the
main cause of their flight.
