VIETNAMESE REFUGEES IN HONG KONG: MP'S LETTER TO SECRETARY OF STATE

Problem

A

1. A letter from the Rt Hon Michael RD Heseltine MP enclosing a

letter from a constituent, Mrs M Crouch of Shiplake, about a

Vietnamese refugee in Hong Kong, Le Van Dong.

Recommendation

2.

I recommend that the Secretary of State replies on the lines of

the attached draft, which has been prepared in consultation with the

Hong Kong Government.

Background

3. Mrs M Crouch has visited the Hei Ling Chau refugee camp and while there met Le Van Dong, the young refugee who is the subject

of her letter. Her main concern is to establish the cause of the

delay in Le Van Dong's resettlement in Canada. It appears from the

advice we have received from Hong Kong that delays of up to six

months are quite normal for those wanting to be resettled in Canada,

after having been accepted there.
