I have the honour to inform you of the appointment of Mr. Daniel Brooks as Regional Director of UNICEF for East Asia and Pakistan (EAPRO) with the Regional Office located in Bangkok, Thailand.
Mr. Brooks, a national of the United States, obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in English, History and International Relations from the University of Connecticut in the USA. His initial working experience was in advertising and he worked with Harper's Magazine of New York (1961-1968) as Publisher and Vice-President.
Mr. Brooks began his distinguished career of service with UNICEF in 1968 as Chief of Publications in the Information Division at New York Headquarters. In 1972 he was transferred to Algiers as Programme Officer and in 1977 as Senior Programme Officer in Indonesia where he assisted in the development of UNICEF programme policies within the context of the Government's five-year plan. In January 1981, Mr. Brooks served as Principal Officer in the Regional Office in Thailand where he assisted and deputized for the Regional Director. He also monitored implementation of UNICEF-assisted programmes in regional and sub-regional programmes and evaluated their impact on the situation of children. In September 1983, Mr. Brooks was appointed UNICEF Representative in Indonesia where he worked closely with the related ministries of the Government towards reducing infant mortality to reach national targets.
Mr. Brooks will assume his responsibilities as Regional Director around March 1989 and will be visiting Hongkong from time to time to discuss UNICEF assistance to programmes benefitting women and children.
