ECSC Treaty : the Commission agreed with the EP that the future of the ECSC, following the deadline for its expiry in 2002, was a question which would have to be addressed now.

Topical and urgent debates
9. Use of chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq war : strongly worded resolution condemning the use of chemical weapons by Iraq and calling for restraint by Iran. The Commission was called upon to help with medical treatment and social assistance for the survivors.
Human rights: resolutions adopted on Vietnamese refugees arriving by boat in Thailand, Colombia (condemning the recent civilian killings but congratulating the government for holding direct local Council elections), Senegal (calling for the release of Mr Wade and three of his associates), Peru (calling for investigations into the situation of a number of persons who had disappeared following their arrest), Israel (calling for the Israeli Government either to bring charges without delay against four arrested field workers of Al-Haq or to release them), Czechoslovakia and GDR (condemning persecution of Christians) and South Africa (one denouncing the recent Phiring and Paris murders; another appealing for
representations to secure a pardon for the Sharpeville Six).
Natural Disasters: resolutions calling for Community emergency aid in connection with the recent natural disasters in West Germany and Argentina, and for technical assistance to be given to those regions in North Africa devastated by locusts.
