Vietnamese Vice Premier Nguyen Cn Thach and General John W. Vessey, Jr.,
Presidential emissary on POW/MIA and other humanitarian issues met at
the U.S. Mission to the United Nations to discuss humanitarian
concerns of interest to both countries, including the POW/MIA issue,
former reeducation camp detainees and U.S. efforts to address
Vietnamese concerns for the war crippled and children with
disabilities.
Discussions focused on progress on the agreement reached in
Hanoi in August 1987 and both sides agreed to accelerate progress.
Acknowledging the presence of a U.S. humanitarian team in Vietnam
at this time, they agreed to the next technical meeting on POW/MIA
to be held in Hawaii by the end of June.
Also discussed was the resettlement of former reeducation camp
detainees. General Vessey and the Vice Premier agreed that experts
representing the two countries will meet in Hanoi next month (July)
to continue the discussion to reach an agreement for the resettlemtn
of all former reeducation detainees and their accompanying family
members who wish to be resettled in the United States.
