You may, or may not be aware that there is no National Memorial to the Chindits who fought in Burma in 1943 and 1944. The Chindits Old Comrades Association therefore decided to remedy the situation and have now been granted permission to erect the memorial depicted in the accompanying photo-montage.

The Chindits were founded and led by my late father, Major General Orde Charles Wingate, DSO, until his death, on active service, in 1944.

The memorial is estimated to cost £100,000 and whilst surviving Chindits, themselves, are making an effective contribution, I am sure there are many governments, military units, business houses and individuals, who have associations with the Chindits and would be glad of this opportunity to participate in the perpetuation of their memory by helping to erect something worthy of their sacrifice and achievements

*

Our Royal Patron, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, is taking a close personal interest in the whole project and strongly supports the design and concept.

Please help us to preserve the name 'Chindit' in its proper place in history.

Yours sincerely

Orde Wayde

Wingate
