BURMA: CHINDIT NATIONAL MEMORIAL
روم
1. Your minute of 2 August refers.
2.
I suggest that your reply to Lt Col White might be couched in something like the following terms:
(a) The FCO is sympathetic to the aim of raising a memorial and ready to offer such advice as it can on approaching appropriate organisations in countries with a Chindit connection.
In any
(b) However such approaches should most appropriately come directly from the Chindits Old Comrades Association. case, the FCO does not have the resources or the remit to take on a more active organisational role on their behalf.
(c) As a first step we would be prepared to send details of the project to our Defence Advisers in the relevant posts for their advice on Ex-Servicemen's Associations, successor regiments etc who might be interested in the memorial.
(d) We suggest that simultaneously the Association approach foreign military attaches in London for similar advice.
(e) We recommend that, if they have not already done so, the Association liaise with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission who are more likely to know who are the most appropriate contacts in the countries concerned.
