the wit?
I believe that in Hong Kong at present birth, death and marriage certificates are obtained in English and Chinese. Because of the large number of British nationals who will remain in SAR after 1 July 1997 it would be useful if this practice were to continue. Do you have any indication of how the SAR are thinking song yet! on this at the moment, or is it possible to place a marker for the continuation of English in these certificates at one of the JLG meetings please? After 1 July 1997 our Consular post in SAR will of course be able to issue British birth and death certificates on the basis of the local ones, but I do not think that this should detract from the desirability of having the latter in English, since not all British nationals resident in SAR will wish to purchase British certificates; the possession of certificates entirely in Chinese would place them in obvious difficulties if they subsequently found they had need of them outside of China.
