Consumers' willingness to pay

The pattern of expenditure on screen entertainment in cable households in the United States and Europe shows that a wide range of people are prepared to spend around HK$160 per month or HK$2,000 a year in order to obtain a greater choice of channels and programming. In the United Kingdom, for example, while the number of households choosing to subscribe to cable television has been lower than anticipated, the amount that consumers are willing to pay has been higher than anticipated, the amount that consumers are willing to pay has been higher than hoped for. In 1986, in the United Kingdom, cable subscribers paid an average HK$230 per month for a basic package with various add-on packages amounting to 12-13 channels in total/excluding the four terrestrial BBC and ITV channels).
