Derailment of LRV : Wednesday, 22 June 1988

at

An LRV became derailed by one pair of wheels near a Toad junction at the exit from Yau Oi Estate, 1241 hours. The vehicle was proceeding slowly out of the Estate road on a left-hand curve, the driver checking that road traffic on the offside of the vehicle was clear,

clear, that

that there was no LRV approaching from the south towards him and that there were no pedestrians near the track when he saw an unidentified person move rapidly out of the vehicles path. A moment later, the vehicle derailed. Subsequent examination of the track revealed baulk of timber on the left-hand running rail which had been partially crushed by the leading wheels of the front LRV bogie. The timber had been forced into the flangeway between the running rail and the adjacent check rail causing the second wheel to left and derail. Police are conducting enquiries into this deliberate case of vandalism.

The other LRV was being driven eastbound along Pui To Road to Town Centre and required to cross both the westbound carriageway of Pui To Road and the track on which the first LRV was running. The intersection was not traffic signal controlled at

controlled at the time

the time of the incident. The first LRV had entered the intersection when the driver saw the second LRV approach on his left. Whilst having the right of way, he stopped the vehicle and sounded the horn as a precaution. The driver of the second LRV misconstrued this as signal that he could proceed and continued

across the intersection, thus

causing the collision.
