In the English press, both the SCM Post and the HK Standard reported that the Government would soon hold talks with China on contingency measures to cope with accidents at Daya Bay.

The Standard. quoted the Secretary for, Economic Services, Anson. Chan as saying that both Peking and HK were anxious to start talks to reach an agreement on how to co-operate in implementing contingency

arrangements.

On the Harwell report itself, the SCM Post pointed out that it had ruled out the need for any drastic emergency measures for HK, including evacuation.

John Wilson, a PAS for Economic Services, told ATV-Diamond's "Newsplus" that there would not be any difficulties in coming to satisfactory arrangements on cross-border information on the Daya Bay plant after 1997.

The convenor of the Legco ad hoc group on the Daya Bay project, Wong Po-yan, told RTHK's "Pentaprism" that it would be impossible for the Chinese authorities not to release details of accidents at the Daya Bay plant just for the sake of "face saving."

He pointed out that HK could use its equipment to detect the level of radiation and that if anything went wrong, HK should have known by a few minutes.
