Wednesday, July 6 Two visiting nuclear experts from the

International Atomic Energy Agency said that HK did not need an evacuation plan in relation to the Daya Bay nuclear power plant, some papers reported.

Speaking to newsmen after a meeting with members of the Legco ad hoc group on the Daya Bay Project yesterday, one of the experts said that HK had a good foundation to establish a package of contingency plans to cope with any nuclear accidents.

He was quoted as saying that the Harwell report was an excellent

report.

He said that China had the expertise to build and operate the nuclear plant at Daya Bay.

The papers noted that the two experts had recently visited China see for themselves nuclear facilities there.

According to the convenor of the Legco group, Wong Po-yan, the experts had denied a suggestion that an evacuation plan was not drawn up for HK because HK was an island and that people could not be

evacuated.

The experts pointed out that the main reason that HK did not need evacuation plan was because it was too far away from the plant.
