Stock exchange closure and related matter: Your TD541/87
The closure of the HK Stock Exchange did not attract much attention in the local media. Factual coverage was given in the Tribune de Genève (see clippings at MIFT four pages). When the topic of world stock market crashes was current, the situation in Hong Kong tended to crop up as well
in casual conversations in GATT circles. While some of the comments we
heard did suggest a certain degree of skepticism (why, of all the markets affected, should Hong Kong have been the only one to suspend trading, did
it really have good reasons to do so, how did this closure and rescue package square with our open trading, non-interventionist philosophy ? etc), the subject was of only passing interest and has already been over- laid by other events and developments in the world economy.
