1987, which has to be interpreted against the
low level of completions in 1986.

In respect of other commercial
premises (mainly shops) in the private sector, completions increased by 215% in
terms of floor area in the third quarter.
The corresponding increase for the first
three quarters of 1988 as a whole was 37%,
while that for 1987 was 63%.

Completions of private sector
residential property increased by 54% in
terms of number of units in the third
quarter. In the first three quarters of 1988, such completions increased by 13% over
a year earlier. In 1987, the corresponding
increase was only 1%.

(a) Building consents
Planned developments of property,
in terms of the total usable floor area on
building plans for which consent to commence
work was given, recorded an increase of 21% in the third quarter, following zero growth
in the first quarter and a decline of 12% in
the second quarter. Increases in consents were recorded for most types of property, the
exception being those in the "others" category, comprising buildings such as
hotels, cinemas and schools (Table 5)
