Mr Eggar undertook to write to members whose points he was unable to answer
I have identified the (due to lack of time).
following:
2.
(a) Mr Tony Banks: Cols 731-733:
-
[see Mr Eggar at Col 750]
PM's answer on rhino horn sales in January did not square with answer in June by Mr Eggar
need for immediate ban on trade in medicinal rhino horn products
eating of monkey brains in Hong Kong
need to ensure checks on restaurants are stepped up what additional measures are being taken to educate the public?
what pressure is being put on China to deal with the animal markets in Shenzhen?
[ I understand that Mr Banks has tabled further PQs and that work on some of these points is in hand.]
(b) Mr Andrew Rowe: Col 742:
need to improve teaching of English in Hong Kong schools
better links with HKU
more exchanges of students and others
It seems to me that all the points on Vietnamese refugees were dealt with in Mr Eggar's reply at Cols 749-50; on emigration at Col 750; and on confidence at Col 752.
3.
Sir P Blaker raised the question of Expo at Col 721, but only in passing. Since anything we could say to him would be negative, I recommend that point is not picked up.
4.
Mr James Couchman at Col 735 and Mr Foulkes at Col 745 raised the question of further progress in proportions of directly elected That point could be picked up, but as seats between 1991 and 1997. there is not much that could be said, (Parliament has already been told that further changes are not ruled out) the case for doing so is marginal.
