Members on all sides of the House have shared their knowledge and insights in discussing the draft Basic Law. We know that people in Hong Kong will be following today's debate closely. I trust they

will be reassured that the concerns which have emerged in the public

debate there have been so clearly reflected in this House.

Before I turn to individual points raised in the debate, let me

stress again that we are paying very close attention to all views

put forward on the Basic Law. I have no doubt that the Chinese

authorities are too. We shall ensure that the Hansard record of

today's debate is formally brought to their attention.

Members have noted that the Legislative Council/ in Hong Kong has also debated the Basic Law over the last two days./. We shall also ensure that the views expressed during that debate, many of which

were echoed here today, are drawn to the attention of the Chinese

Government.

In opening the debate, my Rt Hon and Learned Friend paid tribute to the openness with which the drafting of the Basic Law has been

pursued. We are glad that a number of mainland members of the Basic

Law Drafting Committee visited Hong Kong in June to listen to Hong Kong people's views.
