1. I attach a copy of a minute which I have received from the Private Secretary, recording the Secretary of State's appreciation of the briefing which we provided for last week's debate. Mr McLaren has endorsed the Secretary of State's compliments.

I am most grateful to all the members of the Department for the contribution which they made to our preparation for the debate. I am very conscious of the time and effort that was taken up in preparing the briefing, typing, photocopying and collating it. was a great help that everyone rallied round so splendidly.
